The Vastness of our God

Scripture to Read Today: Ephesians 3:14-21

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.

Ephesians 3:20


During some of the extended time at home during the early days of the pandemic, I watched several documentaries and TV series that focused on the vastness of our universe. For example, one National Geographic series, "One Strange Rock," hosted by Will Smith, explores the vastness of the systems of just our planet. The first episode describes how dust storms in the Sahara desert blow across the ocean to the Amazon Rainforest. As the desert dust falls in rainstorms, it provides rich nutrients to help the thick undergrowth of the rainforest thrive.


The episode of the program shows satellite images tracking the dust cloud from Africa to South America with fascinating detail. As Smith narrates, he describes both the vastness and the detailed intricacy of this fantastic weather system. In addition, he describes the unique process of replenishing nutrients in a rainforest from the dust of a desert. As I watched this episode, the fingerprints of our divine Creator stood out to me with incredible clarity. What an excellent demonstration of the power and vastness of our God's handiwork in the universe!


Creation demonstrates the vastness and transcendence of our God in a myriad of ways. In Ephesians 3:20, the Apostle Paul reminds us as believers that the vastness of our God includes an unimaginable capacity and capability to do anything. He says that God is "able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine." Our finite requests for our needs to be met barely touch into His infinite strength and ability. We cannot begin to comprehend the greatness of our God.


Paul reminds us that our infinite, beyond comprehension, God loves us and is on our side. He gives us what we need for today, but He can meet all the needs of our lifetime now by His very nature. That God created the incredible immensity of the universe and the extraordinary intricacy of all its amazing systems. We walk with that God. We depend on that God. We trust God to give us exactly what we need, even if we think we need much more!


There is nothing our God cannot do. In His vastness and wisdom, He gives us what we need for today!
