Scripture to Read Today: 2 Timothy 3:10-17

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

so that the servant of God may be thoroughly

equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

If you grew up going to Sunday School in a church, you probably sang some simple songs for kids. Many of the songs I sang in my home church in Indiana were both simple and profound. Often the melody was easy to learn, the lyrics were not complicated, but the truths expressed were rather deep.

One such song was "The B-I-B-L-E." It was a simple preschool or early elementary song that spelled out the word Bible as part of the song. Here are the lyrics:

The B-I-B-L-E, yes, that's the book for me.

I stand alone on the Word of God.

The B-I-B-L-E.

Children not only learn how to spell the word "Bible," but they also learn to stand firmly on what it says - even if they stand alone. At the end of the song, most churches had the kids yell, "BIBLE!"

As the Apostle Paul wrote the young pastor Timothy, he pointed out that Timothy had learned the Scriptures as a child from his mother and grandmother. The Bible, Paul said, helped Timothy come to saving faith in Jesus (2 Timothy 3:14-15). He then described how Timothy must continue the journey from childhood faith to being fully equipped by the Scriptures for "every good work" (2 Timothy 3:17).

Like Timothy, we have the Scriptures to help us grow and thrive in Christ. As we engage with and soak in the Word of God, we grow from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity. God's Word is God-breathed (or inspired), so we have the tools and resources to be transformed into the image of Jesus (2 Timothy 3:16). God does not intend for us to stay immature in our faith. He gave us the Bible to grow us.

Read the simple lyrics to "The B-I-B-L-E" a few times today and commit yourself to stand firmly on it as you live your life today!

We must embrace how the Scriptures stretch, nourish, and grow us from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity!
