"My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less" or "On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand" is the best-known hymn of Edward Mote. Mote served as the pastor of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Horsham West Sussex in the United Kingdom when he wrote the song in 1834. The original title of this hymn was "The Immutable Basis for a Sinner's Hope."

Mote told a Christian periodical of his day how the hymn came to be. "One morning, it filled my mind as I went to write a hymn on the gracious experience of man or woman in Christ."

The core inspiration for Mote's hymn came from Christ's parable of the wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24-27). Christ speaks of the foolish builder who built his house on sinking sand while the wise builder built his on solid rock in the parable. As you would imagine, a storm quickly swept away the one built on sand. However, the one built on rock stood through the storm. Christ is the solid rock upon which we can build our house of faith. Any other foundation is like the one on sand and will ultimately fail.

The Book of Ephesians provides the theological background on why Christ is our solid rock. Nine times in the opening fourteen verses of the first chapter, we read some form of "in Christ." What Christ accomplished for us in His crucifixion and resurrection secured our eternal standing before God forever.

In Christ, we are safe and secure. No storm of life can ever move us.
