Not Every Promise, But Plenty

Scripture to Read Today: Ephesians 3:1-13

This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 3:6

When I was a kid, our church regularly sang a Gospel song titled, Every Promise in the Book is Mine. The chorus simply says:

Every promise in the book is mine,

Every chapter, every verse, every line,

All are blessings of His love divine,

Every promise in the book is mine!

While the song's sentiment communicates the preciousness of God's promises to His children, it does not entirely give the full story of our relationship to all the promises in God's Word. God promised Abraham that he would make his name great (Genesis 12:2). That does not mean God promises to make my name great. God promised David that his son would be the next king of Israel (2 Samuel 7:12-16). I should not count on my son being the next king of Israel. Not every promise in the Book (the Bible) is written to me or for me.

That reality does not diminish how many wonderful promises in God's Word are written to me and for me. Paul emphasized with the Ephesian believers that "in Christ" we have the blessing and joy of great promises from God. He says that we are "members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus." That promise found in our redemption in Christ includes eternal life, hope, and the presence of the Holy Spirit with us as we walk through life.

When we know Jesus, the most precious of all promises undergirds life today and ultimately forever. No matter what we face, the promise that we remain safe in His grasp provides us strength at this moment and hope for whatever we face tomorrow.
