Today, December 26th, many celebrate Boxing Day. The United Kingdom and other nations associated historically with the British recognize this day in a particular way. No, it has nothing to do with the sport of boxing. Much like Black Friday in the United States, Boxing Day is now known more for post-Christmas shopping, discounts, and sales than its historical significance.

There are numerous theories regarding the origins of Boxing Day, but the majority agree that it began as St. Stephen's Day when presents were distributed to the impoverished. Its name may be related to the Alms Boxes at the back of churches, emptied and distributed on this day. John Mason Neale wrote the song "Good King Wenceslas" in 1853 about a king in the 10th century who delivered food to a needy family on St. Stephen's Day. "Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing," the song concludes.

It appears to historians that St. Stephen’s Day fell the day after Christmas to emphasize how Christ came to meet the needs of the poor and overlooked. Philippians 2:5-11 describes how the Son of God came from heaven to us. He left the privileges of divinity, came in human flesh, and lived among those of little means. In complete humility, Jesus helped others - even the least of these - as a servant. He who was rich became poor so that all, through His poverty, might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).

Philippians 2:5 says that as the followers of Christ, we are to reflect the same attitude Christ had as he came to earth and walked among us. He cared for the poor and the marginalized. Proverbs 28:27 says, "Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses." To live and love like Jesus includes caring for the poor - giving to those in need.

Generous people have everything they need. Those who are stingy and do not share it with the needy, on the other hand, may find themselves lacking. It's a good idea to think about those who are less fortunate not just before the holidays start, but also the day after Christmas. The challenge of finding a place for all of our new Christmas presents once opened is common. We discover that cupboards, closets, and garages are already bursting at the seams.

Giving like Jesus to those in need brings so much satisfaction! I've learned through the years that God never fails to meet my needs. The more I give to others, the more God blesses me! Boxing Day is a day to remember the poor and wanting. It is a day to be generous like Jesus has been gracious to us.
