God of the Impossible

Sunday - December 12th

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.

Our God is the God of the Impossible. The Creator of the universe is not limited by anything in all of His creation. Nothing for Him is improbable, implausible, or impossible. As He walks with His children, He often calls on us to take significant steps of faith. Humanly, these steps of faith are daunting and intimidate us.

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he startled her. After reassuring Mary that his presence need not frighten her, Gabriel shared with her that she had found favor in the Lord's eyes. God was going to cause her to conceive and give birth to a son. That son would be the son of the Most High, and He would be named Jesus - Jehovah's salvation.

Mary questioned how any of this could happen since she was a virgin. What the angel promised seemed impossible. Mary responded with a simple question, "How will this be?" After explaining that the Holy Spirit would conceive the child in her, Gabriel said it was possible because "No word from God will ever fail" (Luke 1:37).

Mary may not have received all the answers to her questions, but she was a young woman of great faith. She responded to Gabriel by saying, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled" (Luke 1:38). She humbly accepts the assignment relayed to her by God's messenger. It was no small assignment. Mary embraced it and asked that God fulfill His Word in her life. She expressed a servant's hope in God.

Oh, that each of us would humble ourselves before God and present ourselves to Him as His servant. May we, like Mary, invite His Word to work in and through us. May we want what He wants.

Even though God's Word calls us to something that may seem impossible from our human perspective, Mary's willingness to accept God's call on her life teaches us that nothing is impossible with God. She embraces the promise God made. Mary knew this would be a disruptive mission to her life, but she accepts it humbly as God's will for her. We can learn from her example.

When you read in God's Word something God calls you to that seems overwhelming, think of Mary. Recognize her depth of faith. Like Mary, tell God you are His servant, ready to see God's Word fulfilled in you.

Humbly embrace what God’s Word calls you to in life - even if it seems impossible!
