Scripture to Read Today: Ephesians 5:1-17
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
Ephesians 5:8

I attended Christie Lake Bible Camp in Paw Paw, Michigan, for several summers when I was a kid. We arrived at camp on Saturday afternoon and were picked up the following Friday. Like most Christian camps, there were plenty of outdoor activities, many fun things to do in the lake, and exciting chapel services designed just for kids. My camp experiences remain some of my favorite activities of my childhood. However, I had a hard time sleeping the first night of camp each year.
Everything was so dark. There were few, if any, lights that could be seen outside the cabins. If you had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you had to walk down a very dark path. That walk to the bathroom/shower house was intimidating.
On the first night of camp, I got little sleep as I tried to adjust to how dark it was outside. If I got up to go to the bathroom, I concentrated so much on how dark it was that I could barely make my way down the path to the bathroom. Of course, I always had a strong flashlight. But that first night each year, all I could think about was how dark it was. For the rest of the camp week, I focused more on the light coming from the flashlight than on the darkness of the location.
I started the week overwhelmed by the darkness and ended the week basking in the light. Paul encouraged the Ephesian believers to walk in the light as children of God's light. He made it clear that we are to be distinctly different from those who walk around in the darkness and sin of our world. Before coming to Jesus as Savior, we are all trapped in the spiritual darkness of our sin. But once we know Christ, we walk in His light.
Our lives should shine so that others are drawn out of the darkness into the light of Christ. Do others see the light of Christ in you, or do they see the same old darkness of this world?
While we were once children of darkness, we who know Christ as our Savior are now children of the light!
