Scripture to Read Today: Luke 19:28-44

"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!"

"Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

Luke 19:38

Gary Dahl, an advertising professional, created Pet Rock in 1975 as a collectible toy. Pet Rocks are smooth stones that were found on Rosarito Beach in Mexico. They were sold in special cardboard boxes with straw and breathing holes, as though they were living pets.

The trend lasted around six months, disappearing after a brief spike in sales during the December 1975 Christmas season. Dahl became a billionaire after selling over 1 million Pet Rocks for $4 apiece. However, the price was reduced substantially by February 1976 due to plummeting sales. The fad faded.

To most of us today, it seems ridiculous to buy a rock, have it shipped with holes in the box and straw as comfort, and call it a pet. But it was all the rage for a few months in 1975. Jesus used rocks in a way that seemed unusual to make a point to those who criticized Him.

Jesus had allowed crowds to greet Him and, actually, worship Him as He rode into Jerusalem on what we call His "Triumphal Entry." The religious leaders called on Jesus to rebuke those who worshipped Him as God. He responded by saying that "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."

Jesus made the point that He indeed was God and worthy of worship. Humanly speaking, His celebrated triumphal entry into Jerusalem that Sunday became some of the key motivation behind the religious leaders seeking His crucifixion by the end of the week. Jesus' point was that all of creation knows Him and will worship Him - even the rocks.

Today, take a few minutes to reread Luke 19:28-44 and join the stones in crying out in praise. Listen to a few of your favorite worship songs and sing along. Take time to worship God today. If you don't, even the rocks will!

We find great joy and peace in worshipping with all of creation the One Who is the Creator of all!
